"EDUCmorphosis"
“… A very fruitful celebration!”
After
months of preparation, finally, all things were set, from the programs, persons
in charge, funds, materials, booths and etc. A long wait was over, last August
4, 2014 the first ever EDUCATION WEEK was held. It was the first time in the
history of Colegio De San Lorenzo that their flagship course would celebrate a
momentous event. The event as entitled “EDUCmorphosis” meaning Education can
bring change to the world. Under the supervision of the College Executive
Officer (CEO) Dr. Pedro Lora, Dean of the College of Education Dr. Cecilia
Geronimo and of course the efforts of the Future Education Society officers in
behalf of the members the event was made possible. The event lasted from Monday
until Friday.
All
year levels in Education department showed an all out support and warm welcome
in the opening ceremony and ribbon cutting on the first day, August 4, 2014.
The main event on that day was the opening of the booths with the theme of
different classroom set ups from 70’s, 80’s, 90’s and 21st century
including the exhibits of instructional materials of fourth year students.
Booths were open not just for education students but also for everyone. The activity
was not just to inform other departments about Educ week but to inform them
regarding the changes in our Philippine Educational System. It was also a great
opportunity for education students to show off their creative side and a means
of bonding. It was a great way to start the first ever educ week.
Activities
were continuous, after the presentation of booths, palarong pinoy on the second
day and finally the most a waited seminar on the third day. The seminar was
entitled “Why TEACH?” lead by the FES president Marvin Loyola. After the
opening remarks of Dr. Pedro Lora, a slogan making contest was conducted in
connection with the theme: EDUCmorphosis followed by the speakers.
The first speaker was Ms.
Irene Abellardo, Preschool Coordinator in CDSL preschool department. She shared
her passion for teaching to the aspiring teachers to be. She enlightened the
students that teaching is not a work that can offer big pay check but a work of
heart “They say teaching is the noblest
profession, why? Because in teaching we don’t get rich by money but we are rich
in papers… and love” this is one of the jokes of Teacher Irene to the
audience, a joke yet it is something to be proud of. Another famous tag line
she left to the audience was “Break the
routine!” Followed by Ms. Ariola, Ms. Saliva and Mr. Arcie, they shared
their experiences in handling students with disabilities, public school
children and hopeless students who later excel. All of them inspire the
students to continue their dream to become a teacher. The seminar was a great
source of knowledge, experience and lesson that an aspiring teacher should
know. It was a preparation to equip the students in the real world of teaching.
To end the week, the last
activity was the outreach program, hosted by the fourth year students of
education, children in Baranggay Maginhawa benefited the program. To begin the
program, selected fourth year students conducted story telling followed by
games, gift giving and small celebration with the children sponsored by
Jollibee.
This event was very
memorable and special for all Educ students, aside from the fact that this was
the first time, the department also celebrated the success in ARAW NG WIKA 2014
and the increasing number of enrollees. Education department started with only
14 students but now, there are over 150 enrolled Educ students. Surely, we can
expect stronger force from them.
The first ever EDUC WEEK as
made possible because of dedication and cooperation of each and everyone, from
the highest office down to the members. It’s not perfect, there are matters
like financial and technical problems, misunderstandings and change of plans
yet these things were usual. If I can turn back time, I would recommend
engaging faculty members in the event because they are also teachers. Overall,
the event is “FLAWSOME” it has flaws but still it was awesome! The event
especially the memories it brought to the students will surely be in their
hearts forever.
